The Skatalites — The Guns of Navarone

I went to The Skatalites concert last Monday.

Me and my friend were a bit worried about the show because the band started playing in the 60’s and pretty much all former members had passed away. We thought it’d be some sort of modern version of what they used to be or that their essence would have been lost. But we decided that we really wanted to go anyway, and we bought our ticket. So glad we did it.

We got an amazing time, they did it awesome. The two founder members left, Lester Sterling and Doreen Shaffer (the Queen of Jamaica Ska) were brilliant, she sang some beautiful songs like Nice Time and Can’t You See. There were also young musicians, those were the ones that initially worried us, but they did it swimmingly (hey, I even got a small crush on one of them!).

The show ended with Don Drummond’s ska adaptation of the theme to the film The Guns Of Navarone thatthe whole crowd started to chant.

They got us dancing from begining to end. But most importantly, they put a smile on my face that stayed all night.

Viu.
