Mazes and Monsters - Drown So Low

This Friday I went to my first ever live show. That’s right. Before Friday, I had never been to any kind of concert, live show or non-school related musical performance of any kind. Long story short: it was amazing.

It was a three band show —Mann Ray, The Radar Cinema and Mazes and Monsters— each of which brought something a little different to the table. Where Mann Ray was pop-infused indie/folk rock (see: Cursive), Radar Cinema was energetic and active prog rock (see: Mars Volta) and where both of those bands failed to really connect with me, Mazes and Monsters (see: Explosions in The Sky) succeeded.

Sadly, it was Mazes and Monsters’ farewell show, but I’m sure they won’t reject your money if you want to buy their album, The Spaces In Between, on Bandcamp. They really worked the goodbye angle for all it was worth, finishing up their initial set with a mash-up of “So Long, Farewell” and “Hey Jude” and having the audience demand one last song. Mazes and Monsters put on an excellent performance and I wish it wasn’t the end for them because I’d definitely go see them again if I could.

I have to admit, it was a great night. I made new friends and wrote horrible self-deprecating haiku in my iPhone’s Notes app while waiting for the show to begin (no, you may not read it). I’ll see you all again next week, and maybe I’ll have something new and interesting to report then as well. Probably not, but maybe…
